Test Name : Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), Urine Order Code : 13000R
Note: This is a Sendout/Referred Test and is only offered to registered patients of SHC or LPCH.
Specimen Type: 24-hour urine. Protect from light and keep refrigerated during collection.
Container Type: Urine Container
Methodology: Quantitative Ion Exchange Chromatography/Spectrophotometry
Standard Run Times: Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat
Turnaround Time: 5-13 days
Special Handling: Submit 4 mL aliquot from urine, frozen in an amber vial. Protect from light. Transport FROZEN. Note: Total volume and duration required. Protection from light required. Patient should be instructed to refrain from alcohol consumption 24 hours prior to collection. Increased ALA concentration is associated with exposure to alcohol, lead, and a variety of other agents. Massive elevation of ALA occurs in the acute porphyrias and hereditary tyrosinemia. Specimen preservation with acid or base is discouraged and may cause assay interference. When collecting urine for additional tests that require acid or base preservation, the ALA aliquot should be removed prior to the addition of the acid or base.
