Special Handling: Collect stool specimen in sterile dry container without transport medium or preservative. Transport the specimen to the lab promptly. Refrigerate specimen if not processed within 24 hours of collection. Freeze specimen if processing is delayed more than 2 days.

Causes For Rejection: Formed stool specimen (doesn't conform to the shape of the container). While testing formed stool specimens is generally not indicated, exceptions include patients with ileus or toxic megacolon. Please contact the lab if you are requesting an exception to this policy. Swabs are not acceptable. Pediatric samples not accepted under age of 1 without Infectious Disease approval. For patient hospitalized greater than 24 hours, <3 unformed stool in 24 hours (excluding patients with rectal tube and ostomy) or laxatives (excluding docusate) in prior 48 hours will be rejected. Test will not be performed on patients who have more than one sample submitted within the last 7 days. For patient hospitalized greater than 24 hours, <3 unformed stool in 24 hours (excluding patients with rectal tube and ostomy) or laxatives (excluding docusate) in prior 48 hours will be rejected.
