Specimen Type: Direct smears: Alcohol-fixed and air-dried, ThinPrep: Material in cytolytic or sterile saline, Aspirated fluid or cell block.
Container Type: Slide holder; sterile container with screw-top for specimens in transport media and for fluid specimens
Methodology: Microscopic Exam: Papanicolaou and Diff-Quick stained slides, ThinPrep, cell block. For lymphoma evaluation submit additional specimens in RPMI media for flow cytometry.
Turnaround Time: 2-3 days; 1-2 additional days for special stains (Ipox)
Special Handling: No refrigeration required, except for fluid specimens or specimens in saline. Direct smears must be alcohol fixed and air dried. Label with full patient name, DOB or MRN, date/initials of collector and specific site and source.

Causes For Rejection: Excessive delay in transport. If required and not submitted refrigerated (fluid specimens or specimens in saline), Direct smears not fixed. Container or slides not labeled correctly with patient's full name, DOB, collection date, initials of collector,source, collection site and side (left or right).
