The Stanford Clinical Flow Cytometry laboratory offers a comprehensive diagnostic test menu, including leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping, CD34+ stem cell quantitation, lymphocyte subset analysis, screening for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobulinuria and fetal cell enumeration. A CLL residual disease monitoring assay is under development.
The most common indications include suspected acute leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphoid leukemias, myeloma or plasmacytoma, an unexplained lymphocytosis, or any atypical mononuclear cell population of unclear origin in blood, bone marrow, body fluids or lymphoid tissue. In addition, patients with cytopenias of unclear etiology may benefit from flow cytometric immunophenotyping, as some hematolymphoid neoplasms (hairy cell leukemia, LGL leukemia) may have relatively subtle peripheral blood or bone marrow findings. While flow cytometric immunophenotyping is generally useful for evaluating most hematolymphoid neoplasms, it is not recommended in cases of suspected myeloproliferative disorder where blasts are not increased, or in bone marrow staging for Hodgkin lymphoma.

Specimens are accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except as noted in test specimen requirements.
Comprehensive review is available, which indicates that a pathologist will review the material (such as bone marrow or peripheral blood) to give a morphologic assessment. Based on that evaluation, the pathologist will recommend the appropriate ancillary tests (such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics or molecular genetics) to completely assess the sample. These additional tests will only be performed after consulting with the ordering physician. Stanford’s expert hematopathologists will recommend only the tests necessary to adequately evaluate the sample.
"Morphologic evaluation" indicates that a Stanford hematopathologist will review and report on the morphologic features of the sample in addition to the other tests ordered. Morphologic evaluation is performed automatically on specimens submitted for leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping and PNH screening. If additional testing (such as molecular testing) is needed after the initial morphologic review, you would be
contacted immediately to consider ordering those studies on the original sample.
