| Description: |
The euglobulin clot lysis test is a global assessment of activity of the fibrinolytic system. The euglobulin fraction of plasma is formed by precipitating plasma at low pH. This fraction contains fibrinogen, plasminogen, plasmin, and plasminogen activators. Inhibitors of plasmin are mainly left in the supernatant, which is discarded. The euglobulin precipitate is redissolved and thrombin added to form a clot. The stability of the clot depends on the fibrinolytic (plasmin) activity present in the euglobulin fraction. Normally, the euglobulin clot is stable for more than 2 hours. Lysis times of less than 30 minutes are indicative of hyperfibrinolytic states. The assay is affected by changes in the concentrations of fibrinogen, plasminogen, and plasminogen activator inhibitor. |
