FREE PROTEIN S ACTIVITY, PLASMA

Test Code: PROTSF
Description: Free protein S is determined by a one step “sandwich” technique of ELISA methodology. It is used for the quantitative determination of free Protein S levels in plasma. Protein S is a vitamin K-dependent protein synthesized in the liver. It circulates in two forms, free protein S, and protein S bound to C4b-binding protein (C4b-BP) in a ratio of 40% free to 60% bound. Only the free protein S supports the functional activity, serving as a co-factor for activated protein C. During pregnancy, there is a decrease in free protein S level. At birth, the functional protein S level is close to that of the adult, the total and free protein S levels are low. During acute phase reactions levels of functional and free protein S are decreased due to increased synthesis of C4b-BP.
Indications: Suspected protein S deficiency, evaluation of thrombophilia.
