HEPATITIS C VIRUS (HCV) GENOTYPE

Test Code: HCVGEN
Description: The HCV genotype test uses molecular methods including RNA extraction, reverse transcription, PCR amplification (core region ), DNA purification and dideoxynucleotide terminator cycle sequencing. Interpretation is based on published sequence differences among genotypes.
Indications: The genotype predicts the likelihood of treatment response, determines the optimal duration of treatment with pegylated interferon alpha and ribivirin, and influences antiviral dosing. Genotypes 1, 4, 5, and 6 usually require longer duration of treatment to achieve a response than patients with genotypes 2 and 3. Dosage can also vary based on genotype.
