This screening test is used in the evaluation of patients suspected of having one of the mucopolysaccharidoses, including Hurler (MPS IH), Scheie (MPS IS), Hunter (MPS II), Sanfilippo (MPS III), Morquio (MPS IV), Marteaux-Lamy (MPS VI) and Sly (MPS VII) syndromes. Total urine mucopolysaccharides (MPS), or glycosaminoglycans, are determined spectrophotometrically and compared to age-matched controls. Abnormal results should be followed by fractionation of mucopolysaccharides by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and by specific diagnostic enzyme assays as necessary.
NOTE: If ordering MPS TLC at the same time, please submit an additional 10cc urine.
