REPTILASE TIME

Test Code: REPT
Description: Reptilase is an enzyme similar to thrombin that is found in the venom of Bothrops snakes. The Reptilase Time is similar to the Thrombin Time in measuring the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. The diagnostic significance of the Reptilase Time is seen in connection with the Thrombin Time. Unlike thrombin, Reptilase is not inhibited by heparin.
Indications: Qualitative assay of fibrinogen function. The Reptilase Time is frequently used to exclude heparin as a cause of a prolonged Thrombin Time. Hypofibrinogenemia or dysfibrinogenemia are causes for prolongation of both the Reptilase Time and Thrombin Time and fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products can inhibit both tests.
