| Test Code: |
TT |
| Description: |
TT, Thrombin Clot Time. The thrombin time measures the final step of the clotting pathway, the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. The test is performed by adding dilute bovine thrombin to patient plasma and recording the time in seconds for a clot to form. Heparin, hirudin, fibrin degradation products, hypofibrinogenemia, or dysfibrinogenemia all cause prolongation of the thrombin time. Patients who are exposed to topical bovine thrombin during surgery may develop antibodies to bovine thrombin. In general, such antibodies are specific for bovine thrombin and are therefore usually not associated with an increased bleeding risk unless they cross react with human thrombin or have coexisting inhibitors to or deficiencies of other clotting factors. If Thrombin Time is abnormal, a Reptilase test is recommended. |
| Indications: |
Diagnosis of hypofibrinogenemia, or dysfibrinogenemia. |
