Stanford Clinical Laboratory Send-Out Department Improvement Plan

Goal Action
Improve coordination between the send-out department and ordering clinicians
  • Develop specialty based email discussion groups consisting of clinicians, the send-out department pathologist (Ann Folkins, M.D.), and section directors with special expertise in the particular areas
Simplify and optimize the ordering process for send-out tests
  • Drastically reduce the number of undefined "lab unlisted" tests by creating orderable test codes
  • Increase transparency about which tests are done in-house and which ones are sent to reference laboratories
  • Review search terms for send-out tests in Epic and Cerner
  • Develop a searchable database for the send-out technologists which links into the existing information system
Monitor referral patterns for tests being sent to outside laboratories
  • Create monthly reports of reference test orders for review by lab administration and section directors
  • Use reports to guide plans for development of in-house tests
Provide on-site medical oversight to the sendout department
  • Create position to provide on-site section direction for the technologists and to act as a point-person for interactions with ordering clinicians
